5 Steps to Design Your Home Like a Pro Interior Designer

Are you planning to design your home but need a professional finish just like an interior designer? I can help you.

Hello readers. I am an interior designer working in this field for 8+ years. Experimenting with home designing is a risk. But not if you know insights from an expert like me.

In this guide, I am going to give you some tips on home designing, which I have been doing in my day-to-day life. Are you interested in knowing? Let us get started.

Tip #1: Lighting should be your first priority

The role of lighting in a home is important. But I often see renovaters taking into consideration this at the end. But this is not the right way. You should take into consideration every kind of lighting, including natural lighting, ceiling lighting, wall lighting, and so on.

My tip is to optimise natural light first. You can add glass doors, skylights, and glassdoors if you have a good budget. Add non-obstructing window dressing or reflective surfaces for smaller revamps.

Tip #2: Decide where to spend the most

Home designing is a process that involves so many parts. But you cannot spend too much on everything, right?

Therefore, you need to make up your mind and decide where you will be spending the most portion at. As an interior designer, I suggest investing in things that add visual life to your home. For example, sofa, flooring, and large pieces of furniture.

You can save on smaller items like mirrors, rugs, and others that are not prominent in the room. Clarity in the budget makes the outcome better.

Tip #3: Visualise before you invest

Most individuals are not able to design their home as they fail to visualise the end result. And, to tell the truth, it is tedious and time-consuming.

When you know what a statement piece or lighting idea looks like, it will be easier to decide, right?

It is best to draw and paint your ideas. You can work on a drawing app and sketch your home design.

I have attached a picture of my student, Olivia, who is incredibly amazing at sketching her ideas into a drawing.

Another idea is to live in the property. So you will identify what your plan will look like. It is amazing how ideas develop and change when you start living and see the possibilities coming to life. But do not make changes if the process has reached mid-way. It will only cause delays and troubles.

Tip #4: Contrast your textures

One of my favourite tips that I learned during my home designing journey, or helping other people (friends or clients) is mixing textures.

Putting this into real life is easy. If you buy soft rugs for a hard floor combined with textured and smooth- painted baskets, you create visual layers in that space. You just need a little budget management for this.

Rugs are a must-have in every living area (do not believe me, just try it. Return it if you do not like it). It can be of different sizes, colours, or fabrics. And remember, you need a good budget to bring in the wow factor in your home.

So think about what you can bring to your room to contrast the material?

Tip #5: Identify the designs that excite you

Pinterest is an excellent resource to locate the best ideas you are searching for to adorn your home. But it is somewhat overwhelming. Because you like all of it and feel the need in your home.

This is why I suggest my clients first connect with an interior designer. You must understand the science of interior design before saving all the ideas you see on Pinterest. This is especially helpful for design students. If you feel bogged down with the technical theory and need more time for the creative side, seeking assignment writing help in Qatar is the best option.
